The Temporary School
Although she lacks the full funds to build her dream school, Alann is undeterred and has already started with small steps. Using her own money and some early donations, she's had desks constructed and a white board installed in the bottom of her family home to create a temporary classroom.
Alann hired a local teacher, Im Savin, and pays the $2.00 U.S. a day salary from her own money and with the assistance of donations. On the first day of classes, 106 students turned up, hoping to participate. By the end of the week, it was up to 200. With heavy hearts, Alann and Savin were forced to turn those from neighbouring villages away, promising to find a solution in the future that will accommodate everyone. For now, their temporary classroom is simply too small.
Savin comes each day to instruct 63 students in English for two hours —32 students in the first hour and 31 students during the second hour. So keen to learn are the students, they begin to arrive at the temporary classroom 30 minutes beforehand to ensure a good spot. Classes are crowded and the learning environment is less than ideal. But, it's a start. In October & November, the classroom, being under the flood line, will be underwater due to heavy rainfall and classes will cease. Alann's dream of building a proper schoolhouse on her land above the flood line remains her ultimate goal.
Your help is greatly needed to make Alann's dream become a reality. A contribution to Alann's Dream will go directly towards the construction of a new school on her prepared land, allowing more classes to be offered and more students to attend. A new school will create a better learning environment and make the lessons more effective. A new school will be built above the flood line so classes can continue year round and contain a room and bed for a permanent teacher.
